It's the first game of the Dusty era kiddies! The honeymoon with Dusty was outstanding. At that time I would have never imagined where we find ourselves today.
This opener at Shea wasn't just Dusty's first with the Cub it was billed as the coming out party for a young 5-tool centerfielder for the Cubs. Corey Patterson, going 4-6 with 2 HR and 7 RBi, had arrived. Take a look at who started the game that day. Yes, he was healthy one spring(not this one nor this one)! Actually this was one of two consecutive Opening Day starts for Kerry. The dreams and ambitions for Baker, Patterson, and Wood may be gone, but we still have the boxscore from a grand opener on a chilly March day in Queens.

wood to have knee surgery
the associated press and other sources are reporting that kerry wood will have his knee scoped on tuesday, march 7, in los angeles. the tribune carries some more details:
the daily herald is reporting it as a torn medial meniscus on his right (drive, not landing) knee, for which normal full recovery times from arthroscopic treatments are said to usually run about six weeks, with physical therapy beginning a week post-op.
it's not at all certain that this constitutes a major setback in wood's recovery from offseason surgery on his labrum and shoulder, but it is clearly a setback that will push his return back some weeks and, best case, well into may.

General manager Jim Hendry called it a "minor" setback for the injury-plagued right-hander who currently is rehabbing his right shoulder after arthroscopic surgery last August. Though no timetable was given for his return, Wood was expected to be back from the shoulder problem in late April.
"I'm not expecting to miss more than a couple weeks," Wood said.
Wood came to the Cubs about three days ago and told trainer Mark O'Neal he was feeling discomfort in the knee. Wood said an MRI revealed the tear, and he will travel to Los Angeles to have surgery by Dr. Lewis Yocum. Wood was still able to throw a bullpen session on Friday and will have another bullpen session on Monday, the day before the surgery.

this writer was underwhelmed to learn that the papers are confirming mark prior will miss his first turn and hopes to pitch the second. prior still hasn't faced live batters more than two weeks after the initial reporting date. the club is now at least openly saying that all this is injury prevention -- rather than repeating the more transparent lies about a christmastime illness.
but this page is of the confirmed opinion that the cubs will never tell the whole truth about the health of their staff. it has become institutuionally ingrained for the team to lie first, furiously and ridiculously, only slowly being beaten back by the increasingly obvious to a reluctant acknowledgment of truth. if it sounds cynical, so be it; it is certainly evidenced -- from internet elbows to achilles heels.
and that makes this page deeply suspicious. with rumors abounding about the state of prior's arm, the fact that the cubs are not hiding prior's elbow concerns is something of a disturbing sign.
